Intended Use
The RF Latex is a qualitative and semi-quantitative immunoassay for the determination of rheumatoid factor (RF) in human serum. The RF Latex is intended as an aid in the diagnosis and monitoring of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in conjunction with other clinical and laboratory findings. The immunoassay is designed for manual professional in vitro diagnostic use.
Diagnostic Relevance
Rheumatoid factors (RF) are autoantibodies directed against antigenic determinants in the Fc fragment of human or animal immunoglobulin G (IgG). These antibodies occur frequently in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and may appear several years before the onset of clinical symptoms. For this reason, RF represents an important laboratory marker that supports the early detection of rheumatoid arthritis. Increased RF levels often correlate with more aggressive disease progression and a higher risk of joint damage.
Diagnostic Detection of Rheumatoid Factor
Laboratories commonly detect rheumatoid factor using latex agglutination assays. In this method, latex particles are coated with human IgG and mixed with patient serum. If rheumatoid factor is present, the antibodies bind to the IgG-coated particles and cause visible agglutination. This reaction allows a rapid and semi-quantitative assessment of RF levels and therefore supports routine laboratory diagnostics.
Clinical Interpretation
Although RF detection plays an important role in the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis, clinicians must interpret the results carefully. Rheumatoid factors can also appear in other autoimmune diseases, chronic infections, and occasionally in older individuals without clinical signs of disease. Therefore, physicians always evaluate RF results together with clinical findings and additional laboratory tests to reach a reliable diagnosis.
